The
Three Principle Aspects of the Path
(Complete Study Course)
Renunciation, Bodhicitta and Correct
View
This is a short yet comprehensive
introduction to the foundation of Mahayana Buddhism
- Renunciation, Bodhicitta and the Correct View. Without
renunciation we cannot achieve Liberation, the cessation
of all suffering. Without Bodhicitta there is no way
to attain Buddhahood. Without the wisdom realising emptiness,
the correct view, there is no way one can attain either
Liberation or Buddhahood.
Renunciation is the wish to definitely
emerge from this cycle of suffering. It does not mean
giving up all our material possessions and living like
a beggar. It is a mental attitude of not being uncontrollably
attached to the pleasures of samsara - our possessions,
partner or job. We are seeking a perfect, pure type
of happiness unstained by attachment. These teachings
explain in depth the 8 leisures and 10 endowments of
a perfect human rebirth, death and impermanence, karma
and the four opponent powers.
This is followed by teachings on
bodhicitta, the wish to become enlightened so as to
free all beings from their sufferings. These teachings
detail the 6 causes and 1 effect method of developing
Bodhicitta, with an extensive explanation of how to
develop equanimity. Geshe-la also explains how it is
not the other person that is the problem, but the relationship
that we have with them that causes us so much suffering.
And finally, the teachings on correct
view explain that the only way to completely cut our
bondage to cyclic existence is by understanding both
the ultimate and the conventional nature of reality. The
correct view teachings unravel our confusion between
how things appear and how they actually exist. How can
we achieve perfect happiness for both ourselves and
for others? By eliminating suffering. To do this we
must eliminate the root cause of suffering - grasping
at the self and at true existence. The method to turn
back these mistaken views is the correct view - realising
the actual mode of existence of all things. This is
the wisdom realising emptiness.
