Why we can't "sell" you Dharma books or CD's as such

Lama Zopa Rinpoche continually mentions the need for skill and thoughtfulness about "selling" holy objects. Ideally Dharma books, prayer flags and any form of Buddhist teaching, mantra or image fall into this category. Rinpoche recognises the particular difficulties of doing this within the context of a Dharma shop.

Rinpoche asks that we don't use the term "selling"; instead that we always try to use the donation approach. So for example, a transaction could go something like this:

"When you give us your donation of $27.50, we would like to show our appreciation by offering you this holy object of some prayer flags."

The point is for us to avoid having the thought that we are selling or buying the Dharma. We are trying to adopt Rinpoche's advice in our Dharma shop and hope you also embrace our new approach.

What does the money go to?

All donations from Dharma books go straight back into our library. After production costs, proceeds from the prayer flags and prayer books go into Dharma related activities such as offerings or holy objects for our gompa. This centre divides the proceeds from the CD's equally between the centre, the teacher and the translator.
